Project Overview

Following the completion of the Regional Youth Health Assessment, one message was clear: young people in Shkodër needed greater access to structured recreational and educational opportunities outside of school. Families, educators, and community leaders expressed a desire for positive youth programming during the summer months, yet no organized community summer camp had ever existed within the municipality.

Recognizing this opportunity, I partnered with local government, educators, volunteers, and businesses to design and launch the municipality's first-ever community summer camp. What began as a simple idea evolved into a collaborative initiative that brought together an entire community to create a safe, engaging environment where children could learn, build friendships, develop new skills, and simply enjoy being kids.

Using creativity, community partnerships, and less than $150 USD in direct funding, we transformed a community need into a sustainable program with lasting local support.

The Challenge

The municipality wanted to create meaningful summer programming but faced several significant obstacles:

No existing summer camp model or organizational framework.
No dedicated facilities or paid staff.
Extremely limited financial resources.
A need to ensure affordability for every family.
Limited recreational opportunities available for local youth during summer break.

Rather than viewing these limitations as barriers, the project focused on identifying community assets and building partnerships that could create long-term value beyond a single summer.

My Approach

As Project Lead, I managed every stage of the initiative from concept through implementation.

Key responsibilities included:
-Conducting outreach with teachers, students, and families to determine community interest and identify program priorities.
-Designing the municipality's first community summer camp based on local needs and available resources.
-Developing an affordable registration structure while creating a process to ensure children could participate regardless of their family's financial circumstances.
-Managing the project budget and purchasing all educational materials, games, and program supplies using less than $150 USD.
-Recruiting, training, and coordinating local volunteers to supervise activities, lead educational sessions, and mentor participants.
-Building partnerships with local businesses and community organizations to secure in-kind donations and operational support.
-Coordinating daily schedules, logistics, educational programming, recreational activities, and volunteer assignments throughout the week.

Community Partnerships

The success of the initiative was made possible through remarkable community collaboration.

Working together, local organizations and businesses generously contributed resources that significantly expanded what the program could offer.

Partnerships included:
-A local manufacturing company donated hot dogs and buns for every participant throughout the week and committed to continuing this support for at least the following two summers, helping ensure the program's long-term sustainability.
-Local cafés donated snacks and beverages for participants.
-A local café owner generously provided the use of an otherwise vacant café during the summer, creating a welcoming space for educational sessions, indoor activities, and meals. Following the camp's success, the owner also committed to making the facility available for the next two summers.
-Community volunteers donated their time to supervise participants, teach educational lessons, facilitate games, and mentor youth throughout the program.

These partnerships demonstrated how a shared commitment to community well-being could multiply the impact of even the smallest financial investment.

Program Activities

The week-long day camp intentionally balanced education, wellness, creativity, and recreation to provide a meaningful and memorable experience for participants.

Most importantly, the program gave children a safe, supportive environment where they could explore, learn, and enjoy the simple experience of being children during their summer break.

Results & Impact

The Community Summer Camp Initiative successfully launched the first organized summer camp in the municipality's history, demonstrating that meaningful community programs can be created through collaboration rather than large budgets.
